Hormonal Imbalance

A Hormonal imbalance is when there is too little or too much of a particular hormone in the body. This imbalance can cause a variety of symptoms and occur at different times of life. We may remember the major hormonal changes in puberty when we were younger, have witnessed them in our own children, or maybe the menopause in women at the end of child bearing years. But, other hormonal imbalances occur, for example in the thyroid, pancreas and in the Adrenal glands. They can also have direct effect on our bodily functions in areas such as fertility and in the production of insulin, causing diabetes.

Symptoms of Hormone Imbalance are:

  • Sleep disturbances

  • Skin problems

  • Brain fog

  • Digestive issues

  • Fatigue

  • Mood swing and depression

  • Weight gain

  • Headaches

  • Loss of Libido

  • Fertility issues

  • Menstrual issues, irregular periods, PMS, painful periods, heavy periods

  • PCOS

Taking the “stress hormone” cortisol as an example, we can see that sometimes the efficiency of hormones can be compromised. Although they are designed to be produced for a specific purpose, sometimes the body just doesn’t know when to stop this process.

Cortisol is produced by the Adrenal Glands and it helps to regulate blood pressure and the immune system in a sudden crisis.

These days our crisis have become more constant and relentless, worrying about paying bills, having work related stress issues or just not having enough hours in the day.

Often cortisol levels remain consistently high which can cause:

  • Sleep problems

  • A depressed immune response

  • Blood sugar abnormalities, especially insulin resistance

  • Abdominal weight gain

Luckily for us, an antidote to the body’s fight or flight mechanism has evolved in the relaxation response.

Reflexology is a therapy that induces this natural relaxation response and works to re-balance in the body. Many clients have reported an improvement in symptoms of stress after having reflexology.

By working the reflexes representing the endocrine glands, a Reflexologist applies pressure to sedate, stimulate and re-balance reflexes that represent body structures. This in turn can have a positive effect on many different bodily functions. It can be particularly helpful with stress but has also been seen to help menstrual issues, fertility and menopause.

Many reflexology clients experience a sense of calm following treatments and most report an excellent night sleep afterwards.
